PHIXER for Parallel Bus: dry plus smash that keeps body on mono fold
A New York drum parallel, vocal crush send, or distorted return can feel dense in headphones. On phone playback, Bluetooth, club PA mono, or livestream fold, kick body and vocal chest thin. Polarity and latency come first. Free phase-repair helps after residual L/R fights remain on a stereo dry-plus-parallel bed you must keep stereo. It is not a compressor, and it does not replace a true mono listen on the group bus.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a polarity button, not a delay matcher, not a widener, and not a parallel compressor. Use it after hygiene, when residual spectral cancellation remains on a stereo dry-plus-parallel blend you must keep stereo.
Three parallel-bus failure modes this page covers
- Dry plus smash / New York drum parallel. Fine in cans; thin kick and snare body on phone or mono fold. Deep guide: Parallel compression / bus phase.
- Vocal crush send or distorted return. Latency or invert vs dry that cancels chest when summed.
- Bass DI cousin. Near-copies on two paths hollow the same way a stereo parallel blend can. Cousin guide: PHIXER for Bass DI.
Fast parallel-bus mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Sum L+R on the group bus or master (or monitor controller mono). Listen to kick body, snare weight, and vocal chest.
- A/B stereo vs mono. Note what disappears: sub, body, chest, punch that was actually cancellation.
- Mute the parallel briefly. Flip polarity on the smash or crush return. Note which combination restores mono weight.
- Confirm on a phone speaker or single earbud path, then again after any bus compressor / EQ / saturation pass, not only before cleanup.
Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)
1. True mono listen on the group / program bus
Hard L+R sum or monitor mono. Habit: parallel bus checklist and mono check workflow.
2. Hero dry path before smash layers
Prefer one clear hero for body (usually dry). Smash or crush for density and grit, not as a second stereo width layer that steals Mid from the hero.
3. Polarity if a return flips
Inverted hardware insert, flipped saturation, reversed send. Flip Ø when body returns. Guide: polarity vs phase.
4. Timing / latency-align before spectral tools
Plugin latency or send delay vs dry needs a few samples or ms, not a widener. Prefer aligning critical lows to the dry hero path.
5. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If a stereo dry-plus-parallel bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo.
Parallel path types
| Setup | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| New York drum parallel | Kick / snare body dips when summed | Polarity; mono listen; quieter smash |
| Vocal crush send | Chest hollows on phone | Align latency; quieter wet |
| Distorted return under dry | Low-mid cancels attack | Mute test; polarity; quieter grit |
| Stem / group bus cousin | Same dual-path scoop on fold | Stem bus guide |
| Bass DI cousin | Near-copies hollow like dry plus smash | Bass DI guide |
Bass DI cousin (short version)
- DI plus amp dual path hollows the same way dry plus smash near-copies on a stereo bed.
- Polarity and timing still come first. Spectral tools after residual L/R fights only.

When not to reach for PHIXER
- Wrong polarity on smash or crush (flip Ø first).
- Obvious plugin latency vs dry (align first).
- You only need a true mono print from one hero dry path (print mono; do not fake stereo width).
- Intentional residual phase for punch or smash tone.
- Honesty list: When not to use PHIXER.
